Stop # 3 in my Wellness Food Tour - Orlando because we need food to feed our soul!
Stop 3 in my Wellness Food Tour 2023 is 📍 Nami Lake Nona (Orlando).
Nami is a contemporary Japanese omakase restaurant and cocktail bar. This restaurant does feature an intimate 67-seat dining room, plus an exclusive 10-seat omakase counter.
Nami does feature traditional Japanese ingredients with a contemporary spin, incorporating signature European elements. Located within The Wave Hotel at Lake Nona.
So, while this restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, they do not have enough gluten free options for the average diner who would be a Celiac. I was just telling my husband the other day, even if I am 1% of the reviews for a restaurant, like 1% of us who have Celiac Disease can not get a full meal or can not eat somewhere without the risk of getting glutened we shouldn't be dismissed because so many other people can have gluten. That 1% over the course of a year or the lifetime of a restaurant can end up being a lot.

So, I have to say outside of the low amounts of gluten free options I would have given this place a 3/5. A 3/5 and not a 4/5 because even my husband agreed the menu was too small and he probably would only come here once and be done with it. I have stayed at this hotel, I have eaten at Bacán as well as Haven Kitchen and gotten drinks from the lobby bar. I was impressed with Bacán for sure, I dined at Haven Kitchen when they were in their soft opening, but even then they also had more to offer to a Celiac like me.
One thing that is always gluten free is edamame and they wanted 13$ for a bowl of that. 13$. A bowl of white rice was 7$. So, you are not only paying the tax of being in a hotel, but an up and coming area, as well as an up and coming Asian restaurant. Even in Tampa I am seeing more and more Asian and Pan Asian restaurants charge crazy prices for items that normally would be $2 to $3 like edamame and white rice- because they can.
For me, this actually creates a problem because items like this are going to be amongst the few that are labeled gluten free along with the always ever so present Miso Cod (and let me tell you, not all MISO IS GLUTEN FREE, but restaurants stay putting it on their GF menus). Anyhow!
So, like I was saying, none of the hamachi was gluten free, none of the maki's, the fried rice wasn't gluten free and two of the sashimi items were GF so that was my meal. Two plates of raw fish. One of which was strange all around.
You will find what I had that was gluten free at the end of the post spoiler alert, its sashimi!:

So, as usual my husband is over here trying some cool stuff. Cool fried stuff. The whole place to be honest smelled like this dish below, the pork katsu. It smelled amazing.
We were both a bit surprised at how this maki came out, but it was ok according to hubs.
BELOW ARE THE GLUTEN FREE ITEMS I HAD
So, I liked this yellowtail a lot. I liked the plating a lot also.
This was the sashimi that I referred to as "odd all around". In texture, it has the mouthfeel of cured dry aged fish, however they did not claim it to be. There also was a rub on it, you can see it on the outside, it didn't really have a flavor, but it had a texture which neither of us appreciated and found to be cloying. I also just wasn't sure it was coffee grounds and so I just gave it to my husband because I also just can not do caffeine.
So, all in all the bill was pricy, we paid for the luxury of being there. Hubs had to take me to another sushi joint right after dinner that had late hours so I could get a full meal; a meal that was half the price of what we got at Nami. Would I recommend Nami? Yes, I thought the whole experience was great, they just didn't have a big enough menu. The drinks were really great also and our waiter had valet bring our car around while we waited for the check. I also recall , there were no gluten free desserts so. I ordered a cocktail while my husband had the Rocher (below) the cocktail took 20 to 25 minutes to arrive and he just said "I am sorry this is just unacceptable" and he removed it from our bill. Their level of service was great. I hear they also have omakase so maybe that may be worth a try if the price is right.
XOXO
