Ro is the newest concept from Three Oaks Hospitality Group, which also operates Steelbach located at Armature Works as well as Stones Throw, M. Bird, Kipos and South Tampa’s Ciro’s Speakeasy. Ro is located in Hyde Park Village.
Ro is a new restaurant concept located within the Hyde Park Village; This is another great restaurant by 3 Oaks Hospitality. It is located adjacent to On Swann for reference.
The overall decor of the restaurant is sleek and chic. The restaurant is dimly lit and a bit romantic and intimate in my opinion. They have a pretty good menu with lots of options starting with cold options, then hot, then signature tastings (including pasta, wagyu, and hot pots), maki, sushi, ramen and salads etc.
As for drinks they also have a great selection with sake, beer, and wine available. Cocktails consist of spirits mixed with sake's and even cold brew. I believe there were a total of 12 specialty cocktails. The cocktail I tried was the Kizuna, which I liked a lot. I did advise them that I was a Celiac and had to have some special adjustments made to my order. They were very helpful with that; for example there were some items that could just not be made gluten-free like the mushroom hot pot.
Overall, I was very happy with the way our food came out. We had a lot of great items. Since this was our first time dining there I can't say what is the "best" or must try, but I would like to try the smoked duck, but it has to be ordered in advance.
We had the Chef prepared 12 pc omakase. I would definitely recommend that. I am a huge fan of omakase and order it every time I can. Price wise the meal is $$$ but I was really glad Ro had a menu that you could order what you wanted and not have to deal with a pre fixed menu with a very high price. The sashimi selected for my omakase was quite delicious and it was much appreciated to have the large piece of King Crab.

So, my review as it was opening night.
As far as the omakase goes it wasn't even anything that I hadn't had, it was Fatty tuna, blue fin, king crab, and two other items. It was all extremely fresh and delicious. Shout out to them for having Tamari (gluten-free soy sauce).
I feel I could have saved my time (it took a very long time for this omakase to come out) and money (120.00$ for 12 pieces of fish) by just ordering exactly what items I wanted and as much or as little as I wanted. I am totally not sure about this because I would need to look at the menu and add up what items I would have just ordered on my own individually to know for sure. What I can say, 12 pc is not a lot of food since it was all sashimi style I think the average person would probably still be hungry.
The fried rice was also an item that took an extended amount of time to come out. I asked for it to be gluten-free so I told them they could make it without soy sauce and I would add the Tamari they had on hand to taste at the table. Well, they decided to make a special sauce which was pretty bland to me. I actually would have rather have had the Tamari. The fried rice also had a mushy kind of strange and broken texture and it had a lot of garlic in it which was overwhelming. Overall, I would not order it again and I love fried rice normally.
As far as the rest of the food goes it came off more as a dim sum and nothing stood out or wowed us. The food was good definitely, but I am unsure if I would return. The ambiance was nice (a little too dark inside) and staff were very friendly.
Online the menu mentioned handrolls, but I can't remember seeing that option on the menu. It may have been there and it was just so dark in the restaurant I missed it. We were interested in the duck, but the menu does say you have to call ahead to order that and I also am unsure it is gluten-free.
We waited a while for our food and by the time we got it and started eating apparently the kitchen closed with no warning being given to us by our waiter to order anything else now. So, as a result we were in fact still hungry and wanted to order more food and the answer was in fact no. Not much acknowledgment was made for the fact that it took 45 minutes to get our food in the first place other than them saying every 15 minutes "oh its taking a while are you all ok".
So, overall yes, I liked the restaurant, but I felt it was lacking in comparison to some nearby cities offerings (especially when it comes to variety and gluten-free options).
It is worth a try to go in and order some stuff and have a good time. It's a nice place.
